Why Do Some People Refuse To Change?

Change is a common topic in the subject of personal development, because change is a part of life. Successful people embrace change and plan for it, but unsuccessful people fear and dread it. Here are some reasons why people are afraid of, or refuse to, change:
Change is uncomfortable.
One characteristic of change that seems unpleasant is that it is uncomfortable. It entails moving out of one's comfort zone, shaking things, moving around, and breaking patterns. This aspect of change is readily visible, and if a person has the tendency to see the negative side of things, the person would tend to focus on the negative impact of change--and sometimes even exaggerate it. On the other hand, the positive impact of change is often not evident. Hence, some people respond to change based on the negative consequences than on the positive effects.
People fear that the change will not turn out well.
People also refuse to change for fear that the change will not turn out positively. Change takes courage, and one major stumbling block is the fear of failure, ridicule, embarrassment, and of the unknown. But, really, ask yourself: "What is the worst that can happen?" "Is it any worse than my condition right now." "Where will I be years from now, if I don't change?"
Some people are afraid to change jobs because of the uncertainties with the new job. But what if it turns out fine? What if it turns out to be the best job so far? As the saying goes, "Stop thinking of what could go wrong, and think of what could go right." It pays to remember that every positive result takes bold decisions.
Change takes effort.
This is true when it comes to diet, physical fitness and exercise. It's also true about reading good books. Everything that affects life in some way takes effort. Watching television all days takes effort; only, the "benefit" of watching television seems more immediate than say, reading a motivational book or listening to audiobooks. But in the long run, when all the negative effects of neglect have piled up, one thing is going to be true: It would take more effort to endure a life of regret.
People refuse counsel and advice.
There are people who refuse to accept criticism and counsel. One sign of this is "seniority complex". You've probably met somebody in your workplace who thinks he or she deserves to be promoted because of seniority. Or maybe you've encountered an older person who refuses to learn from a younger person who happens to know better. Wisdom comes from the lessons gained from experience, not just age.
Really, what is there to fear or worry about change?

The Power of Asking Why

One of the most exciting things about being human is getting to figure out firsthand exactly where the limits of the my mind lie. There is no set level of knowledge any of us can aspire to attain. Even if we succeed in quantifying the sheer volume of data the average human brain can hold, there are an infinite number of permutations and combinations of information a mind can contain, as new information is always appearing. Each of us can, theoretically, continue to change the present structure of knowledge in our minds and spend each day as a slightly different person than the day before. This sustained change is possible only when we maintain the curiosity necessary to seek out answers to new questions, and the bravery to boldly ask "why" something unfamiliar happens.
"Why" is the doorway to personal growth.
It allows the foreign to become familiar, and turns the overwhelming into something manageable by human thought. A tremendous amount of fear and distress come from nothing more than the perception of an unmanageable or unknowable force (or an overloading number of factors to deal with). This instinctual reaction to flee in these moments generally does a disservice, as most of the time fleeing is not an option. We can't run, yet we feel compelled to, so we stay perpetually moving in place in the middle of a situation which will never be dealt with fully. Eventually, the stress destroys us.
Whenever the darkness approaches, I sit with it as long as necessary to really experience the painful sensations it sends through my nervous system, as well as the ghastly thoughts it brings to my mental forefront. If there is one principle I have faith in to remain true until the end of time, it's the trust that nothing ever happens which cannot be understood. My belief in this absolute gives me a religious strength against whatever internal or external chaos erupts in my life. I've relied on the assurance of my ability to make sense and order from the seemingly random and destructive forces at work in the world to pull me up from my worst moments and propel me toward growth.
It still astounds me how far I've come in making sense of and gaining mastery over thoughts and things which once controlled me. Some of them were physical in nature, but the majority were purely emotional. Activities or ideas which once turned me to shambles now have little to no effect on the balance of my fragile psyche. Some now even strengthen me. Mistakes of the past which once invoked only sadness or anger have been engineered into a sense of determination and focus. The phantoms which used to linger in the background of my thoughts are now pillars for the lofty ambitions I actively work to attain. I know the only reason I am able to transmute former weaknesses into strengths is because I was brave enough to ponder why these maladies were begrudging me, and take the necessary steps toward mending them.
It follows that one of the biggest obstacles most people face to defeating challenges in their lives is their lack of confidence in their abilities to adapt. Failure to adapt to changing circumstances stems from an insufficient understanding of their methods of change. So a person incapable of embracing and adapting to change will tend to stay within the narrowly defined limitations of those facets of reality they already understand. But if instead they could boldly approach every new situation and make it through the initially torrential nature of unfamiliar settings, they could continue to expand their working mindset for as long as they live. Getting to that level of comfort with anything requires surviving the tumultuous first steps that come with it.
Even the most degraded of human minds is a fascinating tool with far-reaching capabilities.
When we begin to doubt this, we sacrifice our most pronounced strength as learning creatures. A lifetime of having been told otherwise, that we are but puny and fractionated identities, causes emotional and intellectual atrophy, and perhaps a permanent loss of our abilities to question and acquire the nature of new things. An inability to understand means that we cannot ever treat foreign concepts and people with the equality we grant to those we feel close and familiar with. It makes us judgmental and impersonal. It keeps the human race at odds with itself over superficial perceptions of difference.
I will never delude myself into thinking that absolute knowledge is attainable, or that I can continue to expand my mind until the end of time. I know I inhabit a world of stark limitations and unbreakable laws. But like a scientist, I intend to spend the duration of my life continuously checking the nature of these limitations and pushing my awareness as far is it can be stretched under the conditions of my physical design. And whenever something so foreign as to seem utterly incomprehensible enters my awareness, I will take it one bite at a time until my mind naturally sorts out a pace and method for integrating it into my working worldview. It is, for me, far better to unceasingly seek to grasp reality as it really is than to spend the entirety of my short time in the world running from every shadowed alleyway and unfamiliar fork in the road.

I got up a thing that killed them like flies - the same with cockroaches. The floor used to be covered with dead roaches, and they fired me for that!"

Today, I will be addressing some issues on stress and giving you some self help tips to handle it. Stress is a subtle enemy if you do not manage it well. Stress has been linked to many illnesses. Here are some ways you can beat stress.
Firstly, it is good to write down your tasks on a piece of paper. This helps you organize your tasks better. In fact, I would also suggest that you prioritize your tasks by rank of importance or urgency. It is also good to plan certain milestones in your schedule, and aim to hit those milestones by a certain time. However, do remember to give yourself a reasonable amount of time to accomplish them. The purpose of breaking down a huge task into smaller bite-sized portions is so that the entire task does not look as overwhelming, and it also gives you a clearer direction for you to steer towards. Take the entire task one step at a time. That is the best way to start a task. You may even find yourself getting clarity of mind while you are at it.
Let us move on to more self help tips for managing stress. Obviously, even while you are doing the bite-sized portions of the task, you will still have to manage your stress levels. I would like to suggest giving yoga a try. Yoga has been scientifically proven to give a person clarity of mind and help him or her accomplish tasks with more focus and accuracy. You could even say that it helps calm a person down. When your mind is at ease and when you are able to think better, you will in turn feel happier and less tense, which can in turn have a beneficial effect on your overall health. In fact, with the help of yoga, you can even look younger than your age.
To end of the self help tips, I would like to encourage you to have a proper work-life balance. After you knock off from work, it is best to stop thinking about work for a change. There should be a proper balance between your career and pleasure. Think about the costs for not achieving the right balance. You could end up fatigued, deprived of social engagements and eventually full of stress.
